Process Automation: What It Is, and How It Differs from Discrete Automation
Process automation uses control systems to run continuous or batch processes, chemicals, food, energy, where the product is a flow, not a countable part. It differs from discrete automation, which handles individual items like assembled products. One controls temperatures, flows and reactions; the other controls pick, place and assemble.

Process automation matters because continuous and batch processes move too fast, and too precisely, for manual control to hold safely. Automated control loops keep temperature, pressure and flow inside their limits, which prevents off-spec product, waste and safety incidents.
