Recipe Management System: What It Is, and How It Differs from a BOM
Why does a recipe management system matter?
In food, pharma, and chemical plants the recipe is the product: get a quantity, time, or temperature wrong and the batch is scrap, or worse, unsafe. A recipe management system keeps versions, approvals, and process parameters under control in one place, so every batch runs consistent and traceable, which is essential for compliance. It also feeds the shop floor directly, so operators always run the current, approved recipe.
What does a recipe management system control?
- The formula: ingredients and exact quantities.
- The procedure: the steps, order and process parameters like time and temperature.
- Versions and approvals, so only the current recipe runs.
- Scaling, to run the same recipe at different batch sizes.

How does a recipe differ from a BOM?
What each captures. A bill of materials lists the components of a discrete product and their quantities. A recipe does that for a process product, and adds how to make it: the steps, temperatures and times a BOM never holds. In process plants the recipe system often feeds the MES, the way a BOM does in discrete manufacturing.
