Process Control Systems: What They Are, and How DCS, PLC and SCADA differ
A process control system is the automation that runs an industrial process, keeping variables like temperature, pressure and flow at their setpoints. The three you’ll meet are DCS, PLC and SCADA. They’re often lumped together, but a DCS controls a whole process, a PLC controls fast discrete logic, and SCADA supervises and visualizes from above.
Why are process control systems important?
Process control systems are important because they keep industrial processes running safely and consistently without constant manual intervention. They hold variables like temperature, pressure and flow at their setpoints, react to upsets in real time, and record the data that proves a process stayed in control. They are the backbone of modern process automation, and the layer that manual checks and inspections sit on top of.
What do DCS, PLC and SCADA each do?
Three tools for three jobs, often working together:
- DCS (distributed control system): controls a whole continuous process, many loops, plant-wide.
- PLC (programmable logic controller): fast, rugged control of discrete logic and machines.
- SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition): supervises, visualizes and logs across sites.
- A plant may run all three: PLCs at the machines, a DCS for the process, SCADA over the top.
How do they differ?
Scope and speed. A PLC is best at fast, deterministic machine control; a DCS is built for controlling an entire continuous process; SCADA sits above both, supervising and collecting data, often across remote sites via remote terminal units. Together they run modern process automation, feeding data up to the MES.
