Manufacturing Execution System (MES): What It Does, and How It Differs from ERP
A manufacturing execution system, or MES, runs and records what happens on the shop floor: it takes the plan, executes it, and tracks production, quality and performance in real time. It sits between ERP, which plans the business, and the machines. ERP decides what to make; the MES makes sure it happens and captures how.
Why is an MES important?
An MES matters because it closes the gap between what the business plans and what actually happens on the shop floor. Without one, production data is captured late on paper, so managers are always reacting to yesterday. By tracking work orders, quality, and performance in real time, a manufacturing execution system gives a live, accurate picture of production and the traceability that regulated industries depend on.
What does an MES do?
It turns the plan into tracked reality on the floor:
- Dispatches work orders to the line and tracks their progress.
- Collects production data, counts and cycle times, as it happens.
- Enforces the process, the right recipe or instruction at each step.
- Captures quality and genealogy, so every unit is traceable.
- Feeds real performance back up, for metrics like OEE.
How does an MES differ from an ERP and MOM?
Three layers. ERP plans the business: orders, purchasing, finance. The MES executes on the floor and records what happens. Manufacturing operations management (MOM) is the wider approach that ties production, quality and maintenance together, with the MES as its execution engine. ERP is the plan, MES is the doing, MOM is how you run it all.
