Remote Terminal Unit (RTU): What It Is, and How It Differs from a PLC

A remote terminal unit, or RTU, is a rugged field device that collects data from remote equipment and relays it to a SCADA system, and passes commands back. It’s built for distance and harsh conditions. It gets compared to a PLC, but an RTU is optimized for wide-area monitoring and communication, where a PLC is optimized for fast local control.

Why does a remote terminal unit matter? 

A remote terminal unit matters because many industrial assets sit far from any control room, out on pipelines, in substations or across a water network. The RTU is what makes those remote sites visible, collecting field data and relaying it to a SCADA system so operators can monitor and control equipment from a distance. Without it, wide-area process control systems would have no reliable eyes and hands in the field.

What does an RTU do? 

It’s the eyes and hands of SCADA out in the field:

  • Reads sensors and meters at a remote site.
  • Sends the data back to a central SCADA system.
  • Relays control commands to field equipment.
  • Runs on rugged, sometimes low-power or solar hardware.
  • Communicates over long distances, radio, cellular, satellite.

How does an RTU differ from a PLC

Distance versus speed. An RTU is built for wide-area, remote monitoring and communication, common in utilities, pipelines and water networks, feeding process control systems. A PLC is built for fast, local, deterministic control of a machine. The line blurs as both get smarter, but the instinct holds: RTU for remote data, PLC for local control. RTU data can feed a condition monitoring system.
