Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM): What It Is, and How It Differs from Condition Monitoring System
Condition-based maintenance, or CBM, services an asset when its measured condition says so, not on a fixed calendar. A reading crosses a limit, a work order follows. It gets confused with the condition monitoring system, but that system is the technology that takes the readings. CBM is the strategy that acts on them.
Why does condition-based maintenance matter?
Condition-based maintenance matters because it services an asset on evidence of wear rather than a guess, so you neither replace healthy parts nor run them to failure. Acting on real readings from a condition monitoring system cuts both unnecessary work and surprise breakdowns. It is the step that moves a plant from calendar-based servicing toward predictive maintenance.
How does condition-based maintenance work?
It ties the work to the evidence, not the calendar:
- A condition monitoring system tracks vibration, temperature, oil and more.
- Each parameter has a limit that means ‘act now’.
- When a reading crosses it, a maintenance task is triggered.
- The asset gets serviced on evidence of wear, not on a guess about it.
How does CBM differ from the monitoring system and predictive maintenance?
Strategy, tool, forecast. CBM is the strategy. The condition monitoring system is the technology that feeds it. Predictive maintenance is the next step: instead of reacting when a reading crosses a limit, it forecasts when that will happen and plans ahead. CBM acts on the present reading; PdM acts on the predicted one.
