Condition Monitoring System: What It Is, and How It Differs from Condition-Based-Maintenance
A condition monitoring system is the technology that watches an asset’s health in real time: sensors and software tracking vibration, temperature, oil and more, so a failure shows up as a trend before it becomes a breakdown. It is the enabling technology, not the strategy itself. Condition-based maintenance is the strategy that acts on what the system sees.
Why does a condition monitoring system matter?
A condition monitoring system gives early warning of a developing fault, so a bearing or motor can be serviced on a planned basis instead of failing without notice. Without it, problems stay invisible until the equipment breaks down, forcing unplanned downtime, emergency repairs and lost production. It is what makes condition-based and predictive maintenance possible in the first place.
What techniques does a condition monitoring system use?
Different failure modes show up in different ways, so a good system reads several signals:
- Vibration analysis, the main technique for bearings, gears and imbalance.
- Thermography, which detects the heat from friction, overload or a loose connection.
- Oil and wear-debris analysis, which reveals wear before it becomes visible.
- Ultrasound, for early bearing faults and leaks too faint to hear.
- Motor current signature analysis, which monitors the electrical side for faults.
How does a condition monitoring system differ from condition-based maintenance?
One is the tool, the other is the plan. A condition monitoring system gathers and interprets the data. Condition-based maintenance (CBM) is the maintenance strategy that decides what to do with it: service the asset when the readings say so, not on a fixed calendar. The system tells you the bearing is degrading; CBM is the policy that schedules the replacement before it fails. Install the system without the strategy and you simply get dashboards that nobody acts on.
