DIN EN 13306: What It Is, and Why It Standardizes Maintenance Terms

DIN EN 13306 is the European standard that defines maintenance terminology: a shared vocabulary for terms like preventive, corrective and condition-based maintenance, so everyone means the same thing. It doesn’t tell you how to maintain equipment; it makes sure that when two people say ‘preventive maintenance’, they’re talking about the same activity.

Why does DIN EN 13306 matter?

DIN EN 13306 matters because maintenance only runs smoothly when everyone means the same thing by the same words. When contracts, maintenance management systems and suppliers all use one agreed vocabulary, specifications and service scopes stop getting lost in translation. That shared language prevents disputes and makes preventive and condition-based maintenance strategies easier to define and compare.

What does DIN EN 13306 standardize?

It fixes the meanings behind the everyday maintenance words:
  • The core maintenance types and what each one covers.
  • Terms for failures, faults and degradation.
  • Concepts like availability, reliability and maintainability.
  • The vocabulary shared across contracts, standards and software.
  • A common language so specifications don’t get lost in translation.

Why does a shared maintenance vocabulary matter?

Because the same word means different things to different teams. When a service contract, a CMMS and a supplier all reference DIN EN 13306, “preventive” and condition-based maintenance carry one agreed meaning across all three. That matters at the points where money changes hands: acceptance protocols, warranty claims, SLA scope. A preventive maintenance plan built on shared definitions survives an audit; one built on house terminology gets renegotiated.
