Predictive Maintenance (PdM): What It Is, and How It Differs from Condition-Based Maintenance
Predictive maintenance, or PdM, uses condition data and analytics to forecast when a specific asset will fail, so you act just before it does. It’s close to condition-based maintenance, but CBM reacts when a reading crosses a threshold, while PdM predicts the failure date from the trend. One responds to now; the other forecasts later.
Why does predictive maintenance matter?
Predictive maintenance matters because it targets the narrow window just before a failure, so you neither service too early nor get caught by a breakdown. Fixed-schedule preventive maintenance wastes asset life and still misses surprise failures; PdM uses condition data to forecast the failure date instead. Done well, it squeezes the most life from critical assets while cutting unplanned downtime.
How does predictive maintenance work?
It turns condition data into a forecast, not just an alarm:
- Sensors and a condition monitoring system gather data continuously.
- Analytics or models read the trend, not just the current value.
- The system estimates remaining useful life and a likely failure window.
- Maintenance is scheduled into that window, before the failure, without servicing too early.
How does PdM differ from condition-based and preventive maintenance ?
Threshold versus forecast versus calendar. Condition-based maintenance acts when a reading crosses a set limit. PdM goes further, predicting when the limit will be crossed and planning around it. Preventive maintenance ignores condition entirely and works to a fixed schedule. PdM squeezes the most life from an asset, at the cost of the data and models it needs to run.
