Breakdown Maintenance: What It Is, and How It Differs from Preventive
Breakdown maintenance is the run-to-failure approach: you fix the machine when it breaks, not before. It’s often treated as the villain, but for cheap, non critical, easily replaced assets it can be the rational choice. On critical equipment it’s the expensive one, because the failure picks the timing, not you.
Why does breakdown maintenance matter?
Used deliberately, breakdown maintenance saves money; used by default, it costs a fortune. For cheap, non-critical assets, running to failure avoids preventive maintenance that isn’t worth it; on critical equipment the same approach means the failure picks the timing and the downtime is unplanned. Knowing which assets belong in which camp is what keeps a maintenance strategy honest.
When does breakdown maintenance make sense?
Run-to-failure can be a deliberate decision, not a planning failure, when the numbers add up:
- The asset is cheap and quick to replace, like a light or a low-cost sensor.
- It isn’t critical, so a failure doesn’t stop the line or the site.
- There’s a spare on the shelf, so recovery is minutes, not days.
- Preventing the failure would cost more than the failure itself.
How does breakdown maintenance differ from preventive and predictive?
Timing, and who chooses it. Breakdown maintenance reacts after the fault; preventive maintenance acts on a schedule before it; predictive maintenance acts on the data, just before the failure would happen. On critical assets, reacting means unplanned downtime, which is why most plants keep breakdown maintenance for the parts that genuinely don’t matter.
