Compliance Audit: What It Is, and How It Differs from a General Audit
A compliance audit checks whether an organization is following a specific set of rules: a regulation, a standard, or a contract. Its yardstick is external and fixed. A general audit can look at effectiveness or efficiency too; a compliance audit asks one thing, are you meeting the requirement, yes or no.
Why is a compliance audit important?
A compliance audit matters because a single missed requirement can mean fines, lost certification or a halted contract. It gives you documented proof that you meet a regulation or standard, and surfaces gaps while there is still time to fix them, rather than during an external audit. Without one, non-compliance tends to stay hidden until it becomes expensive.
What does a compliance audit check?
It tests evidence against a defined requirement, not a general opinion of good practice:
- The specific regulation, standard or clause in scope.
- Records and evidence that the requirement is actually met.
- Gaps between the requirement and what’s really done.
- Whether previous findings were closed
- A clear result: compliant, non-compliant, or compliant with findings.
How does a compliance audit differ from a general audit?
The yardstick. A compliance audit measures against an external requirement, pass or fail. A general audit, whether internal or external, can also judge how well or how efficiently something is done. Compliance is binary; effectiveness is a spectrum. A standard like IATF 16949 is checked through compliance audits.
