Total Quality Management (TQM): What It Is, the Principles, and How It Differs from QA and QC
Total quality management, or TQM, makes quality everyone’s responsibility across the whole organization, aimed at the customer and improving forever. Quality assurance and quality control are parts of it: QA prevents defects, QC catches them. TQM is the wider culture that ties them together and never treats quality as one department’s job.
Why is total quality management important?
TQM matters because when quality is treated as one department’s job, defects slip through the gaps between functions and reach the customer. Building quality into every process, and making it everyone’s responsibility, prevents rework, scrap and complaints rather than just catching them at the end. It ties quality assurance and quality control into one continuous improvement culture aimed at the customer.
What are the principles of TQM?
Different frameworks phrase them differently, but the core is consistent:
- Customer focus: quality is defined by the customer, not the spec sheet alone.
- Everyone involved: quality is owned across every function, not just QA.
- Process thinking: improve the process and the product follows.
- Continuous improvement: never finished, always chipping away.
- Decisions on data, not opinion.
How does TQM differ from QA and QC?
Scope. Quality control catches defects in the product. Quality assurance builds the process so fewer are made. TQM is the whole-organization culture that contains both and adds customer focus and continuous improvement, powered by kaizen. QA and QC are tools and disciplines; TQM is the philosophy they sit inside.
