Quality Assurance (QA): What It Is, and How It Differs from Quality Control
Quality assurance is the work you do to stop defects happening: the processes, standards and checks built in before a single part is made. It is often used interchangeably with quality control, but quality control is the other half, catching defects after the fact. QA prevents; QC detects.
Why is quality assurance important?
Quality assurance is what keeps defects from being built into a product in the first place, rather than caught later at inspection or by the customer. Without it, problems surface as scrap, rework, recalls and warranty claims, all of which cost far more than preventing them. It is also the backbone of compliance with standards like ISO 9001 and the audits that go with them.
What does quality assurance actually cover?
Quality assurance is built around the process. It designs quality into the way work is done, instead of inspecting it in at the end:
- Defined procedures and standards, so the right way is the documented way.
- Process controls that keep variation inside limits before it becomes scrap.
- Supplier qualification, so defects do not arrive with incoming parts.
- Training and audits that keep the system working over time.
How does QA differ from QC?
Prevention versus detection. QA is the system that stops defects being made; quality control is the checking that catches the ones that slip through, with tools like a control chart or statistical process control. QA is proactive and process-wide; QC is reactive and product-specific. You need both, but confusing them means you try to inspect quality in at the end instead of building it in from the start.
