Lean Production: What It Is, the Wastes, and How it Differs From Mass Production

Lean production is a way of making things that chases out everything the customer wouldn’t pay for, so more value flows with less waste. It grew out of the Toyota Production System. Mass production optimizes for volume and big batches; lean optimizes for flow and pulling to real demand.

Why is lean production important?

Lean hunts the seven classic wastes, the muda that adds cost but no value:

  • Overproduction, making more or sooner than needed.
  • Waiting, for parts, information or the machine.
  • Transport and motion, moving material or people more than necessary.
  • Over-processing and excess inventory, doing or holding more than the customer wants.
  • Defects, the rework and scrap that eat capacity.

Which wastes does lean target?

Lean hunts the seven classic wastes, the muda that adds cost but no value:

  • Overproduction — making more or sooner than needed
  • Waiting for parts, information or a free machine
  • Transport and motion, moving material or people more than necessary
  • Over-processing and excess inventory, doing or holding more than the customer asked for
  • Defects, the rework and scrap that eat capacity

How does lean differ from mass production

Flow versus volume. Mass production runs big batches to maximize machine use, which piles up inventory and hides problems. Lean pulls to real demand with pull production, keeps batches small, and surfaces problems fast so kaizen can fix them. Mass production asks how to keep machines busy; lean asks how to keep value moving.
