Initial Commissioning: What It Is, and How It Differs from Recommissioning
Initial commissioning is the first commissioning of new equipment or a new plant, taking it from installed to proven and accepted for the very first time. It differs from recommissioning, which re-proves equipment after a change or a period out of service, and from retro-commissioning, which tunes a building that was never properly commissioned.
Why is initial commissioning important?
Initial commissioning matters because it is the one chance to prove new equipment works to its design intent before it goes into service. Rush it, and hidden faults surface later as breakdowns, rework and disputes over who is responsible. Done properly, it takes equipment from installed to accepted, with the evidence and sign-off to back it up.
What happens during initial commissioning?
It’s the full first-time journey from installed to accepted:
- Mechanical completion and pre-commissioning
- Energizing and functional testing for the first time.
- Performance testing against the design intent.
- Punch list closure and documentation turnover.
- Acceptance and handover to the operator.
How does it differ from recommissioning and retro-commissioning ?
When, and against what. Initial commissioning is the first time, against a fresh design intent, the full commissioning process on new equipment. Recommissioning re-proves equipment after a modification or a spell out of service. Retro-commissioning tunes an existing building that was never commissioned properly. Initial is day one; the others are later resets.
