Commissioning: What It Is, the Phases, and How It Differs from Start-Up
Commissioning is how you prove a new plant or building actually works as designed before it’s handed over: every system tested, verified and documented, not just installed. It runs in phases, from cold checks to live performance. People shorten it to ‘start-up’, but start-up is one moment inside commissioning, not the whole job.
Why does commissioning matter?
Commissioning is what stops a new plant or building from going live with hidden faults that only surface once production depends on it. Skip it, or treat start-up as the whole job, and those faults get found in operation, when a fix is slowest and most expensive. A disciplined commissioning process of testing, documentation and sign-off is how a project reaches operational readiness on schedule instead of firefighting after handover.
What are the phases of commissioning?
Commissioning moves through a set sequence, and each phase proves something the last one couldn’t:
- Mechanical completion: the system is installed to drawing, but nothing is proven yet.
- Then pre-commissioning, the cold, de-energized checks that confirm it’s safe to switch on.
- Commissioning itself: the system is energized and put through live functional and performance testing.
- Finally post-commissioning, where it runs in service and performance is confirmed for handover.
How is commissioning different from start-up?
Start-up is a moment: the first time you energize and run the system. Commissioning is the whole disciplined journey around it, the commissioning process of testing, verifying and documenting that everything meets spec, usually overseen by a commissioning agent. Start it up without commissioning and you find the faults in production, at the worst possible time.
