Idle Time: What Is, What It Causes, and How it Differs from Down Time
Idle time is time a machine or worker is available and able to run, but has no work to do. The equipment isn’t broken; it’s just waiting. That’s what separates it from downtime, where the equipment can’t run at all. Idle time is a flow problem; downtime is an equipment problem.
Why does idle time matter?
Idle time matters because it is capacity you are paying for but not using: a machine or worker ready to run with nothing to do. Unlike a breakdown it is easy to overlook, since nothing is broken, yet it quietly caps output and drives up the cost per unit. Measuring it separately from downtime shows how much of your loss is really a flow problem, not an equipment one.
What causes idle time?
Idle time is almost always a flow or supply problem upstream:
- A starved feed, no material arriving to work on.
- A bottleneck upstream that hasn’t handed work down yet.
- Waiting on a changeover, an approval or an instruction.
- An unbalanced line, where one station outpaces the next.
How does idle time differ from downtime?
Whether the machine could run. Downtime means the equipment can’t run: broken, in maintenance, faulted. Idle time means it’s perfectly able to run but has nothing to do. Downtime shows up in machine availability; idle time shows up in utilization. You fix downtime with maintenance and reliability, and idle time by balancing the flow.
