Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE): What It Measures, the Formula, and How It Differs from TEEP

Overall equipment effectiveness, or OEE, is a single score for how well equipment runs when it is scheduled to run. It multiplies three factors: availability, performance and quality. A perfect 100 percent means only good parts, as fast as designed, with no stops. TEEP takes it further by counting all the hours in the calendar, not just scheduled time.

Why does OEE matter?

OEE turns scattered production losses into one number, making it clear how much capacity is lost to stops, slow running and defects. Without it, those losses stay hidden across separate reports and improvement effort gets aimed at the wrong problem. A reliable OEE figure shows where downtime, speed loss or quality issues are costing the most, so teams fix what actually matters.

What are the three factors in the OEE formula?

OEE is Availability multiplied by Performance multiplied by Quality. Each factor removes a different type of loss:

  • Availability: the share of scheduled time the machine was actually running, reduced by downtime.
  • Performance: how close it ran to its designed speed, reduced by minor stops and slow cycles.
  • Quality: the share of parts that were good first time, reduced by scrap and rework.
  • Multiply the three together and you get a single number with nowhere for losses to hide.

How does OEE differ from TEEP?

The difference is the clock they use. OEE measures effectiveness against scheduled time, so it answers “how well did we run when we planned to run?” TEEP, total effective equipment performance, measures against all 168 hours in a week, so it answers “how much of the asset’s total capacity are we using?” OEE can look strong on one shift a day; TEEP shows the capacity sitting idle the other sixteen hours. The availability leg leans directly on downtime and machine availability.
