House of Quality: What It Is, the Rooms, and How It Differs from QFD
The house of quality is the matrix at the heart of quality function deployment: it maps what customers want against the engineering characteristics that deliver it, and weighs the trade-offs. The roof, the rooms and the correlations give it its house shape. It’s one tool inside QFD, not the whole method.
Why is the house of quality important?
The house of quality matters because it keeps what the customer actually wants connected to the engineering decisions that deliver it, instead of letting requirements get lost on the way to the drawing. Laying wants against characteristics in one matrix makes the trade-offs visible and forces teams to agree on priorities early, when changes are still cheap. That is why it anchors quality function deployment and early product design.
What are the rooms of the house of quality?
The matrix earns its name from its parts:
- The left room: customer wants, weighted by importance.
- The ceiling: the engineering characteristics that could satisfy them.
- The middle: how strongly each characteristic drives each want.
- The roof: how the characteristics support or conflict with each other.
- The basement and right room: targets, benchmarks and priorities.
How does the house of quality differ from QFD?
Tool versus method. Quality function deployment (QFD) is the whole approach, often several matrices carrying the customer’s voice from needs all the way to production. The house of quality is the first and most famous of those matrices. Every house of quality is part of QFD; QFD is more than the house. It fits early design, alongside APQP.
