Quality Gate: What It Is, and How It Differs from Continuous Quality Control
A quality gate is a go/no-go checkpoint between project or production phases: pass the criteria and you proceed, miss them and you don’t. It’s a hard stop by design. That’s what sets it apart from continuous quality control, which checks constantly but doesn’t hold a phase from starting.
Why is a quality gate important?
A quality gate matters because it stops an unfinished or defective phase from moving forward and creating far more expensive problems later. By forcing a clear go/no-go decision against criteria agreed in advance, it keeps projects and production on track and makes accountability visible. In structured quality planning like APQP, these gates are what keep each phase honest before the next one starts.
How does a quality gate work?
A gate is defined before the phase, not argued at the end of it:
- Entry criteria: what has to be true to even hold the review.
- Deliverables: the evidence the phase was supposed to produce.
- Exit criteria: the pass conditions, agreed in advance.
- A decision: go, conditional go, or no-go, with an owner.
- No quiet pass: an open critical means the gate stays shut.
How does a quality gate differ from continuous quality control?
Checkpoint versus stream. Quality control runs continuously, catching defects as work flows. A quality gate is a discrete stop between phases that either lets the project proceed or holds it. QC keeps the current phase honest; the gate decides whether the next one starts. In APQP, each phase ends on a gate.
