Computer-Aided Quality Assurance (CAQ): What It Is, and How It Differs from a QMS
Computer-aided quality, or CAQ, is software that runs the technical side of quality: inspection planning, measurement data, gauges, complaints and control charts. It overlaps with a QMS, but a QMS manages the whole quality system, documents and processes, while CAQ handles the hands-on quality data underneath it.
Why is computer-aided quality important?
Computer-aided quality matters because it pulls inspection data, measurements, gauges and complaints into one system instead of scattered spreadsheets and paper. That makes quality data traceable, speeds up analysis with tools like statistical process control, and provides the evidence auditors and standards such as IATF 16949 expect. For many plants it is what makes a modern quality management system workable day to day.
What does a CAQ system do?
CAQ digitizes the technical quality workflow:
- Inspection planning and instructions, tied to the part and the drawing.
- Measurement and gauge data capture, straight from the shop floor.
- Control charts and statistical process control on live data.
- Complaint and nonconformity handling, with links to corrective action.
- Supplier quality and incoming inspection records.
How does a CAQ differ from a QMS?
Depth versus breadth. A quality management system manages the whole framework: documents, audits, training, processes, the system a quality assurance team runs. CAQ is the technical layer that handles the quality data itself, the inspections and measurements. Many plants run both, with CAQ feeding hard data into the wider QMS.
