Production Management: What It Is, and How It Differs from Operations Management
Production management is planning, scheduling and controlling the making of goods so the right products get made on time, to quality, at cost. It’s focused on the production process itself. Operations management is broader, covering all the activities that turn inputs into outputs, production included. Production management is one part of it.
Why is production management important?
Production management matters because without a firm grip on planning and scheduling, orders ship late, machines sit idle and materials run short at the worst moment. It keeps the right products moving through the line on time, to quality and at cost, day after day. Weak production management shows up fast as missed deadlines and rising work in progress.
What does production management cover?
It runs the making of the product, day to day:
- Production planning and scheduling against demand.
- Dispatching work and tracking progress on the floor.
- Managing materials, capacity and bottlenecks.
- Holding quality and cost while hitting the plan.
- Feeding back real performance for the next plan.
How does it differ from operations management?
Scope. Production management focuses on making the product: the schedule, the line, the throughput, often executed through an MES. Operations management is wider, the whole system that turns inputs into outputs, and its manufacturing arm is manufacturing operations management. Production management is a subset: the production part of operations.
