Batch Production: What It Is, and How It Differs from Continuous and Job Production
Batch production makes a group of identical items together, then switches the line to the next product. It sits between job production, which makes one-offs, and continuous production, which never stops. Batches give flexibility and scale at once, at the cost of changeovers and inventory between runs.
Why is batch production important?
Batch production matters because it lets one line make several different products without a dedicated line for each. Get the batch size wrong, though, and you either pay for constant changeovers or tie up cash in inventory sitting between runs. Understanding it is the starting point for balancing flexibility, cost and changeover time on a shared line.
When does batch production fit?
Batches earn their place in the middle ground:
- You make several products on the same line, not just one.
- Demand is steady enough to justify a run, but not a dedicated line.
- Setup or changeover cost makes tiny runs uneconomic.
- Variety matters, so full continuous flow is too rigid.
How does batch differ from continuous and job production?
Where it sits on the volume-variety scale. Job production makes one-offs, high variety, low volume. Continuous production runs one product non-stop, high volume, low variety.
