Mean Time to Acknowledge (MTTA): What It Is, and How It Differs from MTTR

Mean time to acknowledge, or MTTA, is the average time between an alert firing and someone actually picking it up. It measures response, not repair. A short MTTR is worth little if alarms sit unacknowledged for an hour first, which is exactly the gap MTTA exposes.

Why does MTTA matter? 

MTTA matters because a fast repair is wasted if an alarm sits unacknowledged for an hour first. It isolates the response delay that plain downtime figures hide, showing whether the problem is people and process rather than the repair itself. Watching it also exposes alert fatigue, where so many alarms fire that none get answered quickly.

What does MTTA reveal?

It catches the delay everyone forgets to measure:

  • It exposes slow response before the repair clock even starts.
  • It separates a people-and-process problem from a technical one.
  • It flags alert fatigue, where too many alarms mean none get answered fast.
  • It’s the first number to check when downtime is longer than the repairs alone explain.

How does MTTA differ from MTTR

Acknowledge versus repair. MTTA stops when a human takes ownership of the alert; MTTR runs on until the equipment is back in service. A long MTTA points at monitoring and staffing; a long MTTR points at the repair itself. Both feed total downtime, and you fix them in different places.
