Commissioning Process: The Steps, and How It Differs from the Commissioning Plan
The commissioning process is the ordered sequence of steps that takes a system from installed to accepted: design review, pre-commissioning, functional and performance testing, then handover. It gets confused with the commissioning plan, but the plan is the document; the process is the work the document describes.
Why does the commissioning process matter?
The commissioning process is what turns a commissioning plan on paper into a system that is actually proven to work. Without a disciplined sequence of design review, pre-commissioning, and functional and performance testing, faults slip through to handover and get discovered in production. Running the steps in order, each one gated by the last, is how a project reaches a clean handover with the evidence to back it.
What are the steps in the commissioning process?
The steps run in order, each gated by the one before:
- Design and documentation review, so you commission against the right intent.
- Pre-commissioning: the cold checks, covered on the pre-commissioning
- Functional testing once energized, proving each function works, then performance testing under load.
- Punch list closure, with every open item tracked to done.
- Documentation turnover and handover to the operator.
How does the process differ from the commissioning plan?
Work versus document. The commissioning plan is written up front: who does what, when, to which standard. The process is the actual sequence of testing and verification the plan calls for. One is the map; the other is the journey. A plan with no disciplined process is a binder; a process with no plan is improvisation.
