7S Framework: What It Is, and How It Extends 5S and 6S
The 7S framework, in workplace organization, extends the familiar five S’s with two more: safety and security. It builds on 5S and 6S rather than replacing them. Same sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain, plus safety, and then security to protect people, assets and data.
Why is the 7S framework important?
The 7S framework matters because a workplace that is organized, safe and secure is the base every other improvement stands on. Adding safety and security to the familiar 5S method makes it fit operations where physical or data security is part of the job. It gives teams a single, auditable standard for keeping the workplace in order, scored the same way as a 5S audit.
What are the seven S‘s?
The five workplace S’s, plus the two the framework adds:
- Sort, set in order, shine, standardize, sustain, the original five.
- Safety, the sixth, which is what turns 5S into the 6S method.
- Security, the seventh, protecting people, assets, information and access.
- The order matters: you can’t sustain what isn’t safe, and you can’t secure what isn’t sustained.
