Safety Audit: What It Is, and How It Differs from a Safety Inspection
A safety audit examines whether the safety management system itself works: the policies, procedures, records and controls, against a standard. A safety inspection checks physical conditions on the floor. The audit asks whether the system is sound; the inspection asks whether the guard is in place.
Why is a safety audit important?
A safety audit matters because a workplace can look tidy and still hide a broken safety management system underneath. Checking the policies, records and controls, not just the floor, catches the process gaps that let hazards recur and incidents happen. Without it, the same failures keep coming back even after each individual hazard is fixed.
What does a safety audit examine?
It goes past conditions to the system behind them:
- Policies and procedures against the standard.
- Records: training, incidents, risk assessments, corrective actions.
- Whether controls are defined, followed and effective.
- Roles, responsibilities and accountability for safety.
- Whether the system improves, or just exists on paper.
How does a safety audit differ from a safety inspection?
System versus conditions. A safety inspection walks a checklist of physical hazards, guards, PPE, housekeeping. A safety audit steps back and tests whether the safety management system is sound: the procedures, records and controls behind those conditions. The inspection finds the missing guard; the audit finds why the process let it go missing.
