ISO 45001: What It Is, and How It Differs from OHSAS 18001
ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems: a framework for reducing workplace risk and injury. It replaced OHSAS 18001, adding a stronger focus on leadership, worker participation and managing risk in context. Same goal, a more modern, better-integrated structure.
Why is ISO 45001 important?
ISO 45001 is important because it gives an organization a recognized, auditable framework for reducing workplace injury and ill health. Certification signals to workers, customers and regulators that safety is managed systematically rather than left to chance, and its shared structure lets it integrate cleanly with quality and environmental management. For many companies, certification is now a condition of doing business with larger customers.
What does ISO 45001 require?
It follows the same high-level structure as other modern ISO standards:
- Leadership that owns safety, not delegates it.
- Worker participation and consultation, built in.
- Hazard identification and risk assessment in the organization’s context.
- Operational controls, emergency preparedness and legal compliance.
- Continual improvement through a plan-do-check-act cycle.
How does ISO 45001 differ from OHSAS 18001 and ISO 9001?
Successor and sibling. ISO 45001 replaced OHSAS 18001, strengthening leadership and worker involvement and using the shared high-level structure. It runs on the same framework as ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 (environment), so they integrate cleanly. A certified safety management system is verified through an external audit
