Commissioning Checklist: What’s On It, and How It Differs from a Punchlist

A commissioning checklist is the structured list of checks a system has to pass, static and functional, before it’s accepted. It’s easy to mix up with a punch list, but a checklist is what you verify, and a punch list is what you found wrong. One proves readiness; the other tracks defects.

Why is a commissioning checklist important ?

A commissioning checklist is what makes readiness something you prove rather than assume. Without a structured list of static, safety, functional and performance checks, gaps go unnoticed until they turn into punch list items or failures after handover. Giving every check an owner and a record means nothing gets signed off on trust alone.

What should a commissioning checklist include?

A commissioning checklist takes a system from installation to final acceptance by verifying every commissioning activity and recording the results.

  • Static checks: cleaned, aligned, connected, calibrated.
  • Safety checks: interlocks, e-stops, isolation proven.
  • Functional checks: every mode and control action runs to spec.
  • Performance checks: output and stability against the target.
  • Sign-off lines, so each section is owned, not assumed.

How does a commissioning checklist differ from a punchlist ?

Verify versus track. The checklist is the proactive list you work through to prove a system is ready. A punch list is the reactive record of what failed or is still outstanding. You run the checklist; the items that don’t pass become punch items. Both belong in the commissioning process, but they do opposite jobs.
