- **Record the factors and score their impact.** Enter each relevant factor in the corresponding 'Factors to Consider' section, score its level of impact on the business objectives and/or goals using a 1-to-4 scale where 4 is the highest, and describe the factor, its likely impact, and why it matters to the organization.
- **Complete the analysis and export the report.** Once all six categories have been reviewed and scored, complete the completion section and export the report for future reference and use in later PESTLE sessions.

Introduction
If you work in business analysis, strategy, or decision-making, you need to anticipate the external forces that could affect your organization and its operations. Use this PESTLE analysis template to assess political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental factors that could influence your business objectives, and score each factor's level of impact for prioritization.
What is a PESTLE analysis?
PESTLE analysis is a strategic framework for assessing the external macro-environment factors that can affect an organization and its ability to achieve its objectives. It stands for Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental factors. The process involves reviewing each category, identifying the factors relevant to your organization, and scoring the level of impact each one has on your business objectives and goals. The checklist walks through each category, providing guiding questions that help you identify political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental factors, and then record and score each factor in a dedicated section. A single scoring system is used across all categories, with 1 being the lowest and 4 the highest.
Why PESTLE analysis matters
External macro-environment forces arise from sources such as government policy, political stability, regulation, economic conditions, demographic change, technological innovation, legislation, and environmental pressures. These forces can affect your operations, your supply chain, your costs, and your market access, and they often sit outside your direct control. PESTLE analysis matters because it provides a structured way to surface those forces, assess how they could support or impede your objectives, and prioritize them by impact. It informs planning, risk management, and decision-making, and it gives you a defensible, repeatable view of the environment in which you operate. It also helps you avoid missing categories of risk that are not obvious from day-to-day operations, such as trade restrictions, changes in employment and health and safety law, or shifts in public opinion and social responsibility expectations. For industries where environmental factors are material, such as those with significant resource use or waste, the environmental category prompts you to assess those pressures explicitly rather than treating them as a sub-point of legal or social factors. By reviewing all six categories, you build a more complete picture of the external forces that could affect your organization's ability to achieve its objectives.
What a good PESTLE analysis covers
A thorough PESTLE analysis covers six categories of external forces. Political factors include political players and decision-makers, political stability, the government's stance on your industry, government policies and initiatives such as subsidies, incentives, taxation, or public spending, political influence, and political risks such as trade restrictions, sanctions, or geopolitical tensions. Economic factors include the state of the economy, interest rates, exchange rates, inflation, labour costs and skill availability, customer demand and consumer confidence, taxation and trade policy, global economic trends, and the availability and cost of capital. Social factors include demographic trends, cultural attitudes and lifestyle trends, education and skills, health and wellbeing, public opinion and social responsibility expectations, social and cultural differences across markets, and changes in family structure, urbanisation, and mobility. Technological factors include new technologies and research and development trends, the pace of technological change, automation and artificial intelligence, technological infrastructure and digital maturity, investment compared with competitors, technology-related risks such as cyber security and obsolescence, and new opportunities from emerging technologies. Legal factors include legislation and regulation governing your industry, employment, health and safety, and labour law obligations, and consumer protection, competition, and advertising rules. Environmental factors include environmental pressures relevant to your organization. The template covers each category with guiding questions, followed by a section to record the factors that apply to you, describe their likely impact, and score their level of impact on your business objectives and goals.
How to carry out the analysis
Work through the checklist in sequence, starting with the political factors. For each category, read the guiding questions and answer them in the response field to identify the factors that apply to your organization. Then, in the 'Factors to Consider' section for that category, record each factor, describe the factor, its likely impact, and why it matters to the organization, and rate the level of impact on your business objectives and goals using a 1-to-4 scale, where 1 is the lowest and 4 is the highest. Use the same scoring system across all six categories so that prioritisation is consistent. Repeat the process for economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental factors. When all categories are complete, export the report for future reference and for use in later PESTLE analysis sessions. The template includes a completion section to confirm the review has been carried out.
