How to Use This Checklist
- Check that work areas, service bays, restrooms, washing facilities, break rooms and locker rooms are clean, sanitary and orderly. Confirm that material storage is neat, stable and safely accessible, and that floors, steps and ramps are free of trip hazards and substances that could cause slips or falls.
- Make sure portable fire extinguishers are visible, accessible and in their designated zones with current, unexpired inspection tags. Confirm that combustible materials are stored away from heaters and heat-producing equipment, that emergency exits and egress paths are unobstructed, and that first aid kits and emergency eyewash stations and safety showers are accessible, stocked, clean and fully operational.
- Check that the vehicle exhaust extraction hose or collection system is intact, functional and in use. Make sure respirators are clean, operable and sealed in designated containers when not in use, that the correct Personal Protective Equipment is worn, and that no one works while wearing rings, loose jewellery, watches or torn or loose clothing. Confirm long hair is tied back or secured under a hat or hair net.
- Check electrical cords for damage and correct routing, confirm they are grounded via the third prong, and verify that Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters are operational in shop and wash bay areas. Confirm that electric motors, hand tools and stationary equipment are free of accumulated dirt, oil and debris, and that utility work lights are sound and fitted with securely fastened bulb guards.
- Confirm safety guards are fitted on pulleys, gears, sprockets and pinch points. Check that hand tools and power tools are maintained and free of defects, that pneumatic tools show no air leaks, that grinding wheels are free of cracks or chips and run without wobbling, and that spark deflectors and shields are installed on bench grinders with tool rests within 1/8-inch of the wheel surface. Confirm pneumatic hoses, extension cords and unused tools are coiled and stored in assigned locations.
- Check that vehicle lifts, hoists and hydraulic jacks are clean and in optimal working condition, that lift hoses, hydraulic connections and cylinders show no fluid leaks, and that lift safety locks are fully engaged and capable of holding heavy loads. Confirm vehicles are correctly balanced and positioned on lifts and jacks per manufacturer specifications, that safety jack stands are used whenever portable hydraulic jacks are used, and that wheel chocks are placed front and rear when vehicles are elevated on jacks. Make sure lifting equipment is serviced according to manufacturer guidelines and that chains, slings and hooks are visually inspected daily before use.
- Confirm in-ground service pits are covered or guarded when not in use, and that the shop is free of leaking or dripping combustible and flammable liquids. Check that these liquids are dispensed and stored away from ignition sources and kept in approved safety cabinets, that compressed gas cylinders are secured with chains or straps and fitted with valve caps, and that spray booths, exhaust ductwork and adjacent equipment are cleaned to prevent combustible residue buildup.
- Walk exterior walkways and customer access points for slip, trip and fall hazards, and confirm dumpster enclosures and waste management zones are clean and free of hazards such as oil spills. Confirm industrial ladders are in good structural condition with rungs and side rails free of grease, oil or other slip-inducing material, that seatbelts are worn whenever vehicles are operated or test-driven, and that a signature and the inspection start and end times and dates are recorded before closing out.

What this inspection covers
This checklist is used to inspect an automotive repair shop zone by zone and confirm that each one is clean, orderly and safe to work in. It begins with an inspection cover sheet — the location, the specific bay or zone inspected, who prepared the inspection and when, how many fire extinguishers were verified, the primary hazard category identified, an overall safety compliance rating, and any remarks or hazards requiring immediate attention. The remainder of the checklist works through housekeeping, fire and emergency arrangements, personal protection, electrical equipment, tools and machinery, lifting equipment, and the handling of flammable and combustible liquids. Work through it before and during the work, not after an incident.
Why it matters
A repair shop combines several hazards in one space. Vehicles are lifted and propped, hand and power tools are used constantly, flammable and combustible liquids are stored and dispensed nearby, and compressed gases are present. The checklist addresses these by checking that spill control and housekeeping are in place, that guards and interlocks are fitted, that lifting equipment is rated and stable, and that flammable materials are stored and used away from ignition sources. It also covers the slips, trips and falls that account for many workshop injuries, and the protective measures — PPE, respirators, exhaust extraction — that reduce exposure to the fumes and dust created by the work itself. Use the inspection as a check on the conditions in front of you, not as a substitute for the manufacturer's specifications or the regulations that apply to your site.
What a complete inspection looks like
For each zone you inspect, the checklist prompts you to confirm the cleanliness and order of designated work areas, that chemical and oil spills are cleared with non-combustible absorbent materials, that material storage is neat, stable and safely accessible, and that floors, steps and ramps are free of trip hazards and of anything that could cause a slip or fall. It asks about the condition of the vehicle exhaust extraction system, the visibility and accessibility of portable fire extinguishers, and whether their inspection tags are current. It covers the wearing of appropriate PPE, the condition and storage of respirators, the clearance of emergency exits, and the accessibility and contents of first aid kits and emergency eyewash and shower stations. It checks that electrical cords are undamaged, correctly routed and grounded, and that GFCIs are operational in shop and wash bay environments. It examines hand tools, power tools, abrasive wheel grinders, spark deflectors, bench grinders and pneumatic tools. It checks lifts, hoists and jacks, including the daily visual inspection of chains, slings and hooks, the covering or guarding of in-ground service pits, the storage and dispensing of flammable liquids and the security of compressed gas cylinders. It ends with housekeeping in exterior walkways and waste areas, ladder condition, and the safety of anyone operating or test-driving a vehicle.
Parts of the checklist
The checklist is arranged in two sections. The opening section is an inspection overview: it records who conducted the inspection, where and when it took place, the zone or bay inspected, and the overall findings. The main section then works through the shop's safety and maintenance checks: housekeeping and order; fire extinguishers, exits, first aid and emergency facilities; personal protective equipment and respiratory protection; electrical safety; tools and machinery, including guards and grinding equipment; lifting equipment, jacks and service pits; flammable liquid and compressed gas storage; and exterior and vehicle-operation checks. Finish by signing the checklist and recording the start and end dates and times.
