How to Use This Checklist
- **Prepare before the visit.** Record the date the checklist is conducted, who prepared it, and the location. Note the subject and grade level that will be observed, so your evidence is tied to the right context.
- **Observe planning and preparation.** Work through the items on curriculum and learning standards, lesson preparation and readiness, clarity of directions, organisation and accessibility of instructional materials, use of teaching materials and resources, enrichment and remediation, instructional time and pacing, assignment and grouping decisions, and the use of notebooks and instructional guides.
- **Observe methodology and delivery.** Look for command and mastery of subject content, integration of a range of teaching materials, clear and practical demonstrations, opportunities for active student participation, questioning techniques, reinforcement of key concepts, adaptation to differing ability levels, and how motivation and interest are sustained.
- **Observe interactions and classroom dynamics.** Note collaboration with individual students and groups, management of classroom routines, poise and voice modulation, how incorrect or incomplete student responses are handled, use of positive and encouraging language, supportive and affirming feedback, and the rapport between teacher and students.
- **Mark each item.** Use the answer scale of Yes, No, or N/A for each statement. Reserve N/A for items that genuinely do not apply to the lesson observed.
- **Complete the evaluation and feedback.** Record the number of students actively engaged during instruction, give an overall teaching effectiveness rating, write an overall performance summary, note the key strengths observed during the lesson, and set out the areas recommended for professional growth.
- **Close out the record.** Sign the checklist and capture the finish time together with the real start and end dates of the inspection.

What this checklist is for
The Teacher Observation Checklist is an educator evaluation tool for assessing teaching performance, instructional strategies, and classroom dynamics. It supports a supportive and effective learning environment for all students by giving an observer a consistent set of criteria to work from during a classroom visit. It is a 38-item checklist. Each item on the observation is marked against the answer scale of Yes, No, or N/A, so the same criteria are applied from one lesson to the next.
What a good teacher observation covers
**Instructional planning and preparation.** This section looks at whether the lesson adheres to the established curriculum and learning standards, whether preparation and readiness are evident, whether directions to students are clear and well articulated, whether instructional materials are organised and readily accessible, and whether teaching materials and educational resources are used effectively. It also covers enrichment and targeted remediation, management of instructional time and pacing, planning of assignments and groupings aligned with instructional objectives, and the use of notebooks and instructional guides. **Teaching methodology and delivery.** Here you assess command and mastery of subject content, integration of a diverse range of teaching materials, clear and practical demonstrations, and opportunities for active student participation. Questioning technique, reinforcement of key concepts, adaptation to students of diverse ability levels, and the fostering and sustaining of student motivation and engagement are also part of this section. **Teacher-student interactions and classroom dynamics.** This section covers constructive collaboration with individual students and groups, efficient management of classroom routines, poise and voice modulation, and how the teacher responds to incorrect or incomplete student responses. It also looks at positive and encouraging language, supportive and affirming feedback, and a warm, respectful and professional rapport with students. **Overall evaluation and feedback.** The final section records the subject and grade level observed and the number of students actively engaged during instruction, then gives an overall teaching effectiveness rating and a performance summary. It closes with the key strengths observed during the lesson and the areas recommended for professional growth.
Why it matters
A classroom visit produces evidence that is only useful if it is tied to specific criteria. By grouping the items into planning, delivery, and classroom dynamics, the checklist lets you record what actually happened across the whole lesson rather than a general impression of it. It also produces something the teacher can act on. Alongside the item-by-item marking, the checklist asks for an overall teaching effectiveness rating, a performance summary, the key strengths observed, and areas recommended for professional growth.
Recording the observation
Each item is marked with the answer scale of Yes, No, or N/A. Use N/A where an item genuinely does not apply to the lesson observed. The opening section records the date the checklist is conducted, who prepared it, and the location; the closing section records the signature, the finished time, and the real start and end dates of the inspection.
