Preschool Assessment Checklist
This Preschool Assessment Checklist offers educators a structured approach to evaluating a child's developmental milestones and learning progress. Designed to capture key observations across learning behaviors, social interactions, and emotional growth, this tool enables teachers to document participation through photos and notes. The resulting insights help families and educators collaboratively support each child's individual developmental journey.

How to Use This Checklist
- Record the basics: the date conducted, who prepared the assessment, the location, and the child's full name and age. **Begin**
- Observe the child across sessions and rate each approach-to-learning statement — initiating play with peers, eagerness to participate, focus and persistence, resolving peer conflicts — on the Consistently Demonstrates / Developing / Emerging / Not Yet Observed scale.
- Rate the social and emotional statements — expressing feelings, showing empathy, sharing and taking turns, caring for the classroom, following rules and routines, confidence and pride — using the same scale.
- Capture participation with photos and notes so the ratings are backed by concrete observations.
- Write the overall assessment summary and developmental recommendations, then **sign and close out** the record.

Why It Matters
Early childhood is a period of rapid change, and progress does not always show up in a single test score. A structured assessment gives you a consistent way to notice what a child does, how often, and in which settings — independently initiating play, persisting on a task, resolving a disagreement, showing empathy, sharing with a peer. Documented carefully, those observations help families and educators support each child's individual developmental journey.
What a Good Preschool Assessment Covers
A usable preschool assessment separates two related but distinct threads: **approaches to learning** and **social and emotional development**. Under approaches to learning, you observe whether the child independently initiates play and engages with peers, shows active interest and eagerness to participate, maintains focus and persistence despite distractions, attempts to resolve peer conflicts, and connects classroom concepts to real-world experiences. Under social and emotional development, you observe self-confidence and pride in accomplishments, understanding and following classroom rules and routines, expressing feelings, thoughts, and opinions clearly, showing empathy and concern for peers and adults, sharing and taking turns in group activities, and contributing to the care of the classroom environment.
Rating Scale
Each developmental statement is rated on the same four-point scale, keeping observations comparable across children and across time: - **Consistently Demonstrates** - **Developing** - **Emerging** - **Not Yet Observed**
