What this housekeeping audit covers
This checklist supports a housekeeping audit across all Defence Force accommodation facilities. It covers sleeping quarters, ablution blocks and showers, laundry and drying rooms, hallways and corridors, doorways and entrances, communal lounges and kitchenettes. The audit also includes bedding kit verification for Schedule 4 requirements, NZ Army Camp Waiouru-specific variations, and Officers' Mess VIP accommodation service standards.
Sleeping quarters: first impressions and detailing
For each room, assess first impressions and detailing. Check that the room presents a clean, fresh scent on entry. Confirm that the room creates a positive visual impression of cleanliness and orderly presentation. Check that walls, furniture surfaces, and doors are free from black marks, scuffs, and stains. Confirm the bedding kit is supplied in full in accordance with contract specifications and Schedule 4 requirements, and that linen and bedding items are clean, fresh-smelling, and correctly presented. Verify that SNCO and Officer quarters are serviced to the full standard specified in the contract. Record the number of rooms inspected during the audit.
Ablutions and showers
For ablution areas, check that they present a clean appearance and fresh scent on entry. Confirm toilets are thoroughly cleaned internally, externally, and behind. Check that soap and paper dispensers are clean and adequately stocked. Confirm shower and toilet cubicle walls are free from limescale, mould, and soap scum buildup.
Laundry and drying rooms
For laundry areas, check that washing machines are free from residual detergent scum and residue, and that tumble dryers are free from accumulated lint in drums and filters. Confirm drying rooms and associated outdoor areas are clean, tidy, and free from hazards.
Hallways, corridors, doorways and entrances
Check that hallways and corridors are clear of clutter and debris such as shoes, bicycles, and unauthorised personal items. Confirm all entrances and doorways are clean, presentable, and free from obstruction.
Communal lounges and kitchenettes
Check that lounge and kitchenette areas create a positive visual impression of cleanliness and good presentation. Confirm all PAT-tested electrical appliances — such as microwave, toaster, kettle, and refrigerator — are clean and well-maintained.
General cleanliness assessment
Across all inspected areas, confirm there are no visible dust accumulations and cobwebs. Check that mirrors are clean, streak-free, and smudge-free. Confirm floor surfaces are appropriately cleaned, swept, and/or mopped. Verify waste bins are clean, emptied, and free from residual debris. Check basins and taps are free from scale buildup and water marks. Confirm benches and tables are clean, sanitised, and hygienic. Ensure all areas are free from loose debris, rubbish, and discarded materials. Record an overall cleanliness rating and a summary of observations and areas requiring remediation.
Bedding kit requirements
Verify each bedding item is present and in serviceable condition. Record the quantity confirmed for each component: blanket (woollen), duvet inner, duvet cover, cotton sheet, pillow slip, pillow, and mattress protector. Note any additional bedding discrepancies identified. The checklist references Schedule 4 requirements for the standard bedding kit.
Officers' Mess VIP accommodation service standards
Assess each VIP service requirement against the contractual standard. Confirm the VIP suite is opened and aired before arrival, with heating activated on cold days. Confirm the guest is greeted on arrival, luggage taken, and escorted to the suite. Verify tea, coffee, and fresh juice facilities are provided daily throughout occupancy, and that breakfast and wake-up call arrangements are established for the duration of occupancy. Check that in-suite meal service is provided on request, with used crockery, cutlery, and glassware promptly cleared. Confirm a complimentary menu card is displayed, with fruit and cheese plates and sewing kits available on request. Verify guest towels — bath towels, face cloths, hand towels, and bath mat — are changed daily, and that guest soaps, shampoos, and conditioners are provided and replenished daily. Confirm an iron, ironing board, and hairdryer are available and in serviceable working order, and that clean bathrobes (two per suite) are provided. Check that the VIP lounge refrigerator is stocked with a selection of beers, wines, splits, spirits, bar chits, and a pen (Officers' Mess bar stock for which the VIP will be invoiced). Confirm staff are available on call to accommodate VIP arrivals at short or immediate notice, and that beds are turned down with tea, coffee, and fruit juice replenished prior to 1930 hours each evening. Record an overall VIP service standard rating and any recommended improvements.
Rating scale
Where a rating scale is provided, assess each item as: - **Excellent** - **Acceptable** - **Poor — Requires Urgent Action** - **N/A** Use the same scale for the overall cleanliness rating and the overall VIP service standard rating.
