What a club audit is
A club audit is a structured walkthrough of a fitness facility in which you check the condition of the building, the equipment, and the day-to-day operations against a defined standard. It is not limited to how the club looks: the same visit covers whether fixtures are secure, whether cleaning has actually been done, whether equipment works, and whether administrative tasks are current. This checklist treats the audit as one continuous inspection. You record when and where the audit was conducted and who prepared it, then work through each area in turn.
Why it matters
Members judge a club on details — a loose tap, a stained carpet, an out-of-date notice board, a vending machine that will not take payment. Auditing against a fixed list means those details are checked on a schedule rather than noticed only when they become a complaint. It also gives you evidence. Completed checks of the cleaning schedule, deep-cleaning tasks, equipment upholstery, and administrative filing show what was verified and when, and flag what needs attention before it escalates.
What the audit covers
The checklist is organised into ten sections and moves through the club in a logical order. - **Facility and preparation** — the date, who prepared the audit, the location, and the audit instructions. - **Restroom facilities** — tiles and grouting free of mould or mildew, clean shower curtains and glass screens, securely fastened and working fixtures, and fully stocked supplies. - **Flooring areas** — carpets free from stains with spot or full cleaning as required, general vacuuming, and thorough vacuuming under and behind equipment, including beneath treadmills. - **Cleaning management** — floor tiles in general areas, the currency and accuracy of the cleaning schedule, documented weekly and monthly deep-cleaning tasks, and the organisation of lost property storage. - **Overall club presentation** — free weights organised on racks, equipment cleaned throughout, clean stretching and functional training zones and group exercise rooms, freedom from litter, a well-maintained front facade, healthy plants, and available member amenities. - **Equipment maintenance** — free weights and accessories, selectorized pin-loaded machines, cardiovascular equipment, other equipment items, and the condition of all upholstery. - **Vending operations** — stock levels and variety, the currency of the stocktake, and correct functioning of the machine. - **Promotional displays** — current and rotated snap-frame materials, clean frames, and a clean, fully stocked retail display wall. - **Member information board** — current challenges, motivational quotes and promotions, prominently displayed club rules, monthly updates, personal training content, nutrition tips, community events and news, and the member business card area. - **Administrative standards** — the office area, filing, phone handling and voicemail, computer housekeeping, member management system records, and the management dashboard.
How to carry out the audit
1. **Record the basics first.** Note the date the audit is conducted, who prepared it, and the location, and read the audit instructions. 2. **Walk the club in a set order.** Move through the building consistently so the same areas are seen each time. 3. **Assess each item on observation.** Check tiles and grouting for mould and mildew, confirm fixtures are secure and working, and verify that restroom supplies are fully stocked. 4. **Check the cleaning itself, not just the result.** Confirm the cleaning schedule reflects the actual standard of the facility and that weekly and monthly deep-cleaning tasks have been completed and documented. 5. **Inspect equipment closely.** Look at free weights, pin-loaded machines, cardiovascular equipment, and other items for correct and smooth operation, and inspect all upholstery for tears, cracks, or wear. 6. **Review member-facing content.** Confirm displays are current, frames are clean, the retail wall is stocked, and the information board carries up-to-date challenges, quotes, promotions, personal training content, nutrition tips, and community information. 7. **Close out the administration.** Check the office, filing, phones, and computers, review the member management system for trial and inactive members, and confirm the management dashboard is current. 8. **Sign off.** Record the signature and completion times and pass any findings to the person responsible for follow-up.
Notes on standards
This checklist is a general facility and operations audit. It does not cite a specific external standard, so check the items as written against your own club's procedures and any requirements that apply to your site.
