Why routine cleaning inspections matter
Cleanliness and hygiene are baseline expectations in any facility that staff, visitors, or the public enter. A cleaning inspection gives you a structured way to confirm that those expectations are actually being met, rather than assuming they are. It also checks the people doing the cleaning: whether they are trained, correctly equipped, and following the same standards every time. Working through the same questions on a routine basis makes it easier to spot areas that are consistently missed and to keep the whole establishment clean, organized, sanitized, and presentable.
Employee standards
The people doing the work are part of the inspection. Start by checking that all employees are wearing their identification name badges and that cleaning staff are dressed in the complete and appropriate uniform. Then confirm that all cleaning personnel have received proper training on the safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemical products, and that they are wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling chemical substances. These items connect hygiene on the floor to the safety of the people maintaining it.
General facility inspection
Walk the facility and record the condition of the fabric of the building as well as the movable items in it. Check that floor surfaces are clean and free of debris, that wall-mounted frames and fixtures are free from dust accumulation, and that ceilings are free from cobwebs and visible dust. Confirm that accessible windows are visibly clean and streak-free, that equipment is clean and in proper working order, and that all rooms are clean, tidy, and presentable. Safety documents should be displayed in their designated location and properly organized, and waste and recycling containers should be clean and sanitized.
Reception and smoking areas
In the reception area, check that the seating area is clean, organized, and presentable, that surfaces and fixtures are free from dust and obstructions, and that the entrance carpet or mat has been vacuumed and is free of stains. Accessible windows should be clean and unobstructed. In the smoking area, confirm that trash and ash receptacles are clean and sanitized, that chairs and tables are in good working condition, and that the landscaping or garden area is properly maintained.
Public restrooms
Restrooms need a detailed pass of their own. Check that floor surfaces are clean and dry, that toilets and urinals are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, and that sink basins and faucets have been cleaned and polished. Confirm that waste bins have been emptied and lined with fresh bags, that wall surfaces are clean and sanitized, and that doors, handles, and hardware are clean and disinfected.
Recording the result
Each check is answered **Yes**, **No**, or **N/A**, so the completed record shows exactly what passed, what did not, and what did not apply on the day. Finish by capturing who inspected and when: the signature, the finished time, and the inspection real start and end dates. Keep the completed inspections together so that repeated issues are visible over time and can be followed up.
