What a general first aid kit checklist is

A general first aid kit checklist is an audit tool for verifying that the kits in your workplace hold enough supplies to provide immediate treatment for minor injuries. Rather than relying on a glance inside the box, you inspect it item by item against a defined list and record what you find. The checklist organises that work into an inventory audit followed by sections on bleeding and wound care, burns, fever and pain relief, antiseptic creams and ointments, over-the-counter medications, sprains and fractures, dehydration, and miscellaneous items.

Why it matters

Employers have a legal and moral obligation to ensure that workplace first aid kits contain adequate supplies. When a kit is short of dressings, gloves, or bandages, the response to a bleeding wound, a burn, or a sprain is delayed at exactly the moment it matters. A structured check makes those shortages visible, and it gives you a record you can act on instead of a one-off impression of the box.

What a good first aid kit check covers

The checklist breaks the kit into the supply groups a workplace actually draws on: - **Bleeding and wound care** — assorted adhesive bandages, butterfly closures, Steri-strips, finger and knuckle bandages, sterile gauze pads, trauma pads, triangular bandages, hemostatic agent, gauze roll bandages, and wound irrigation. - **Burns** — burn gel or cooling gel and sterile burn dressings. - **Fever and pain relief** — a digital thermometer and pain relievers. - **Antiseptics** — hydrocortisone cream, antibiotic ointment, povidone-iodine pads, antiseptic cleaning pads and hand wipes, and lip balm. - **Over-the-counter medications** — antihistamines, anti-nausea and anti-diarrheal medication, cold and flu medication, antacid tablets, and cough drops. - **Sprains and fractures** — flexible and finger splints, instant cold packs, and elastic compression bandages. - **Dehydration** — electrolyte replacement tablets and oral rehydration solution. - **Miscellaneous items** — sterile eye pads, a CPR face shield or pocket mask, nitrile examination gloves, trauma shears, fine-point tweezers, and waterproof adhesive tape.

How to carry it out

1. Record the date the check is conducted, who prepared it, and the location of the kit. 2. Open the kit and inspect each item in the bleeding and wound care section, marking every supply Sufficient, Insufficient, or N/A. 3. Move through the remaining sections in the same way: burns, fever and pain relief, antiseptics, over-the-counter medications, sprains and fractures, dehydration, and miscellaneous items. 4. Finish with the miscellaneous items and the sign-off fields, including the real start and end dates of the inspection and a signature. 5. Document the inventory findings and assign corrective actions to responsible personnel for anything marked Insufficient.

Recording your findings

Each supply is logged on a three-point scale — Sufficient, Insufficient, or N/A — so the outcome is consistent from one check to the next. The inventory findings and corrective actions let you record what is missing and who is responsible for resolving it, turning the inspection into a record you can follow up on rather than a set of notes that goes nowhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is an audit tool for verifying that the first aid kits in your workplace contain enough supplies to give immediate treatment for minor injuries. You work through the items section by section, record whether each one is sufficient, insufficient, or not applicable, and note any corrective actions that are needed.

Employers have a legal and moral obligation to keep workplace first aid kits adequately stocked so that minor injuries can be treated immediately. A kit that is missing bandages, dressings, or gloves can delay treatment for bleeding wounds, burns, sprains, and other common injuries.

The checklist is organised into an inventory audit plus sections covering bleeding and wound care, burn treatment, fever and pain relief, antiseptic creams and ointments, over-the-counter medications, sprain and fracture management, dehydration treatment, and miscellaneous items. In total it prompts you to check 55 items, from adhesive bandages and sterile gauze to splints, electrolyte tablets, and nitrile examination gloves.

You record the date, who prepared the check, and the location, then work through each supply and mark it Sufficient, Insufficient, or N/A. Findings are documented and corrective actions are assigned to responsible personnel where supplies fall short.

The items are logged with a Sufficient, Insufficient, or N/A scale. Anything marked Insufficient can be recorded in the inventory findings and given a corrective action assigned to a responsible person, so the gap is tracked until it is resolved.
