How to Use This Checklist

  • Confirm the **Audit** section has been completed with the date of assessment, the person who prepared it, and the location covered.
  • Verify that a current **risk assessment and risk treatment plan** — including the Statement of Applicability — is on file and has been reviewed.
  • Sample **training and competence records** to confirm that personnel working under the organisation's control are competent on the basis of education, training or experience.
  • Check that a **management review** has taken place and that its outputs are documented.
  • Walk through a sample of **operational areas** to confirm that controls described in the Statement of Applicability are actually implemented.
  • Confirm that **nonconformities and corrective actions** from previous reviews are logged and tracked to closure.

ISO 27001 checklist

An ISO 27001 checklist is a structured tool that helps you assess whether your organisation is ready for certification, and identify where your information security management system (ISMS) needs further work. This checklist follows the clause structure of ISO 27001:2013 — the international standard for information security management — and lets you evaluate your ISMS section by section. It is not a substitute for the standard itself, but a practical way to work through its requirements and record the state of each one.

How this checklist helps

The checklist supports a readiness review: you evaluate the state of preparation of the organisation, discover gaps in its processes, and examine the ISMS against the requirements of the standard. Each item asks you to determine whether the requirement is fully in place, partially in place, or not applicable to your organisation. The manual review points step through this in order, beginning with the context of the organisation, covering what the standard sets out on scope, interested parties and the ISMS itself, and continuing through leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement.

Work through the clauses in order

The checklist covers the main clauses of the standard, each in its own section. You verify that **leaders** have established an information security policy and assigned responsibilities, that **planning** produces risk assessment and treatment, that **support and operation** provide the necessary resources and competence, and that **performance evaluation and improvement** close the loop. This structure makes progress easy to track and lets you focus resources on the weakest areas. Standard clauses such as 4.1 (the organisation and its context) and 4.2 (the needs and expectations of interested parties) form the starting point, because everything that follows depends on them.

Recording evidence and answers

For every requirement, you record a result: **Completed**, **More work needed**, or **N/A**. In the **Audit** section, you note when the assessment was conducted, who prepared it, and the location covered. Over repeated reviews, this makes it easy to see which gaps have been closed and which are still open.

Keeping the record current

ISO 27001 applies to any organisation that wants to establish, implement, maintain and continually improve an information security management system. Treat this checklist as a recurring tool rather than a one-off exercise: run it before and after each improvement cycle, and again before any surveillance or recertification audit. Because the answers are recorded, you build a picture of how your ISMS is maturing over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

The checklist splits into two parts. The **Audit** section captures the practical header details of the review: when it was conducted, who prepared it, and where it took place. The remaining sections then walk through the management-system clauses in order — context of the organisation, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation, and improvement — closing with an **Completion** step. Working through the sections in sequence mirrors the structure of the standard, so you assess each requirement before moving to the next.

Each requirement carries the same answer scale, so the reviewer records one of three outcomes for every item: **Completed**, **More work needed**, or **N/A** (not applicable). Recording evidence and noting who conducted the assessment in the **Audit** section keeps the completed checklist usable as a record.

Use this checklist before an ISO 27001 certification audit to establish how prepared the organisation is. It is an internal readiness tool: it surfaces gaps in process and gives you a clause-by-clause view of the information security management system. Once gaps are identified, the same checklist helps you confirm that the corresponding work has been completed.

The checklist follows the clause structure of ISO 27001:2013: context of the organisation (clause 4), leadership (clause 5), planning (clause 6), support (clause 7), operation (clause 8), performance evaluation (clause 9), and improvement (clause 10). It also covers the audit (clause 9) and management review requirements. It should be used alongside, not instead of, the standard itself.

Every time. An ISMS is a living system, so the checklist is most useful as a recurring self-assessment rather than a one-off exercise. Repeating it lets you confirm that previously identified gaps have been closed and that the management system continues to meet the requirements.
